Hello. My name's Nathan, and I love Trader Joe's. My wife Sonia does too. She's a great shopper, has excellent taste and knows good value when she comes across it. As many of you know, Trader Joe's is unsurpassed in the world of good-value grocery stores, so we spend a lot of our time and money there. Although the store fairly consistently delivers great taste with its own unique line of food products, there are definitely some big-hits, and unfortunately, there are some misses...

After doing a couple of internet searches for reviews of TJ's food items, Sonia discerned an apparent dearth of good, quality reviews for the store's offerings. So, at her suggestion, we decided to embark on a journey of systematically reviewing every Trader Joe's product, resulting in the blog you are about to read...

A couple of months into our Trader Joe's rating adventure, an old college friend, Russ, who unbeknownst to me had been following our TJ's blog, decided that I had been slacking in my blogging duties (which, of course, I was) so he decided to contribute his own original TJ's reviews to the blog, thus enhancing it, making it more complete and adding to it a flavor of his own. He and his wife Sandy are also avid TJ's fans and, as you will soon discover, he is an excellent writer and is nearly as clever, witty and humble as I am.

Seriously though, Russ: You go, boy!

So here it is: "What's Good at Trader Joe's?"

Trader Joe's Spicy Chai Latte

I've never done Tai Chi, but I've had my share of Chai Tea.

I'm aware that joke isn't original. I can't remember where I heard it or who said it, but I'm pretty sure I'm just copying someone else. Nonetheless, it shall stand as the opening line of this blog entry. Thanks for not calling me out on my unoriginality.

As I was saying, I have had plenty of Chai Tea in my time. In general, I really like it. Trader Joe's brand is no exception. In fact, for the cost of one Starbucks Chai Tea Latte, I can have about 10 or 12 from TJ's, and I like the taste at least as well. There aren't any weird colors or preservatives, and it comes with a convenient little measuring scoop that can be used with other products long after your TJ's latte is gone. It's like a happy little souvenir of your trip to Chai-land.

It's slightly spicy, slightly sweet. I could stand it just a tad sweeter (but I probably shouldn't have it that way...there's diabetes on both sides of my family). I really do like it just the way it is. Sonia likes it even more than I do. It's everything a good chai should be. $3 a can. Serve it chilled for an iced chai latte.

Rock on, Trader Joe. Yet another winner. 4.5 stars from Sonia, 4 stars from me. Bottom line: 8.5 out of 10.

  1. Hi Russ,
Love the site! I found your blog here: http://www.thedailymeal.com/whats-good-trader-joes-0
I was looking for recipes online when I stumboled on The Daily Meal.

  2. Hi erinz - awesome! We have no idea how those good folks at The Daily Meal found us, but we're sure glad they did. About to post some reader contest details so keep posted!

  3. I bought the Trader Joe's Spicy Chai Latte mix last time I was at the store and I have to agree with your review. It is really darn good! The price is great too. You get about 7 cups of Chai Tea per tin of mix which calculates out to about .50 cents per cup.

My only complaint is that I can't buy this in a bigger tin :)

  4. I am kinda a chai tea/latte freak and this is seriously the best chai I have ever had in the U.S.

  5. Hi! I just bought this today and it is DELICIOUS! THanks :)

  6. There's a new chai and it's so delicious I dedicated a post to it on my blog - check it out :)

  7. I just discovered your blog today when doing some online research in preparation for a trip to Trader Joe's this evening. : ) I have found it to be quite helpful, and this particular post really amused me. By the way, I actually have done tai chi AND had my share of chai tea. ; ) Both are lovely.

  8. Hey there! Does anyone know if Trader Joes still carries this product? Our branch (western MA) has been missing it for months now and I'm hoping to the powers-that-be that they haven't discontinued it...

  9. I just bought it at my store in Illinois.
