Trader Joe's Green Chile Chicken Bowl

Shockingly, this chicken bowl did not come from Canada, as so many other selections from Trader Joe's did. I guess we're to assume it's a domestic product despite its Mexican-inspired-ness. Although, I suppose they might not tell us each time an item is imported. Either way, it's a tasty dish. Let's take a look.

There's quite a lot of dark meat chicken in this bowl. I might be on the record saying I only like white meat, but in this case, I'll make an exception. The meat isn't greasy or low quality at all. It's finely shredded and has a very soft, succulent quality even after heating in the microwave. There's honestly just as much chicken in the bowl as rice, if not more. They didn't skimp.

The flavor is nice, too. There's a modest amount of heat from the green chiles and spices, which include black pepper, chili pepper, cumin, garlic powder, and oregano. Sonia and I both really liked the seasoning combo and didn't even feel the need to add our own spices.

Drawbacks? There's not enough cheddar cheese—what little was there was very nice. The whole thing is mushy. We both thought the mix could have used some crisp veggies like corn or chunks of bell peppers. Neither issue is a dealbreaker by any means.

$4.49 is about a dollar more than I'd want to pay for something like this, but it's decent food and very convenient. You can heat it in the oven but we opted for the microwave and weren't disappointed. Sonia will go with eight out of ten stars on Trader Joe's Green Chile Chicken Bowl. I'm down for seven out of ten.

Bottom line: 7.5 out of 10.

  2. I bought one box in late 2024 and put it in the back of the freezer, thinking I never knew when I would try it. It's April 2025 and I am still going through PT and healing from several falls over the past year. I was hungry and needed something quick and easy. As a true lover of Green Chile salsa from NM, I hoped I would be able to taste them so I threw this in the microwave and the warmer it got, the more I could smell the flavors as I stirred it up. I was surprised at the amount of shredded chicken, much more than I expected and I was satisfied with the amount of rice, cheese, spices and yet would have added a spoonful of Green Chile's but could not find the jar in the cabinet. That is the only real change I would make but if you are new to GC's, there is just enough to bite into every few bites and get the taste, flavor and mild heat. I am hooked and now am going to TJ's and hope they have them in stock. If not, I'll be pushing for them to try and get them back. First food I've eaten in almost a year that wasn't from the hospital or rehab and there isn't enough jars of GC's to fix them. In addition, I lost most of my teeth during COVID and have major problems in eating anything meat or chicken. NOT THIS PROBLEM with this bowl so enjoy "what chewing" you can still do and know you shouldn't have any problems. Thank you TJ's for continuing to bring us new foods, flavors and treats to make each day happier. Good thing my freezer is 90% empty so I can stock up on all the TJ's GOODIES.
